AFT Activities - The Islands - Isle of Mull

Mull
Maps compiled using Ordinance Survey data

Historically, a number of rivers on Mull have supported significant fisheries for salmon and sea trout. Catches have much reduced over recent years. The AFT has undertaken a juvenile fish sampling programme on six river catchments on the Isle of Mull.

Fish surveys

Electrofishing surveys of the Forsa, Aros, Bellart, Ba, Coilador, Lussa and Bunessan catchments were undertaken in 2003 to evaluate the distribution and relative abundance of juvenile salmon and trout on the island.

Management

This data has been used to inform individual riparian owners, fishery owners and the Mull District Salmon Fishery Board which has helped to facilitate the West Mull Area Management Group's development. The AFT is currently working on a further project to re-survey the island's fish populations and collect information on fish habitats.

Our work on the Isle of Mull is supported by Scottish Natural Heritage, Lighthouse Caledonia (Lighthouse Caledonia (Pan Fish Scotland Ltd)), Scottish Sea Farms Ltd, European Community Economic Development Programme, Argyll & the Islands Enterprise, Argyll Estates and the Mull District Salmon Fishery Board.
