AFT Activities - The Islands - Isle of Arran
The Isle of Arran has historically supported significant fisheries for salmon and sea trout. In line with the decline in salmonid species elsewhere in Argyll, these fisheries have all but disappeared. AFT has undertaken a limited sampling programme on a small number of river catchments on the Isle of Arran, but little is currently known of the status of fish populations in most of the island's rivers.
Fish surveys
Electrofishing sampling of all the Iorsa, Glenrosa and Sliddery catchments were undertaken in 2000 to evaluate the distribution and relative abundance of juvenile salmon and trout present.
Management
This data has been used to inform individual riparian and fishery owners and the Arran Rivers Improvement Association and help facilitate the development of the Arran Area Management Group. AFT is currently developing a project to survey more of the islands fish populations and collect information on fish habitats.
Our work on the Isle of Arran was supported by Arran District Salmon Fishery Board which is now part of the Argyll District Salmon Fishery Board.
