JOB VACANCIES - 23 / 02 / 2009

Fisheries Biologist

Salary from 22 - 28k, Subject to Experience

In an exciting development, the Argyll Fisheries Trust seeks an experienced biologist to fill a new post created to allow AFT to meet its objectives towards the sustainability of wild fish and their habitats in Argyll.

Based at the AFT office at Inveraray, the person will be part of a team developing programmes to restore and support wild fish populations underpinned by monitoring and research. The AFT undertakes a wide range of projects in partnership with stakeholders, conservation bodies and local communities where developed people/communications skills will be required. The Trust works closely with the salmon farming community through the Scottish Government’s Area Management Agreement initiative and a familiarity with aquaculture practices would be an advantage.

As well as holding a degree in a scientific or environmental discipline with further practical experience working outside academia, AFT is looking for a person who is enthusiastic, aspires to develop, is self motivated, able to manage projects and has an innovative approach to the Trust’s development, including fundraising.

Ideally the applicant should also be qualified to SFCC team leader standards in electro fishing, familiar with GIS mapping programmes and should be able to demonstrate an understanding of Catchment Management Planning.

The Argyll Fisheries Trust is a charitable company limited by guarantee. Set up in 1996 it has a track record of scientific excellence including being at the forefront of establishing the importance of the practical use of genetics. The AFT biologist team reports to an active and involved Board of Management.
